Aikido  Printer Friendly Page  Printer Friendly Page  Send to a Friend  Send to a Friend

Aikido (eye-key-doe) is a flowing art utilizing circular technique, mental energy and harmony to subdue an aggressor. Aikido allows people of any stature to become proficient in self-defense as it does not require strength to be effective. This theory of accepting and redirecting conflict with an opponent is sure to enhance the way you handle the stress of daily life.

The art of Aikido teaches a student how to utilize the strength, power and flow of their attacker to their own advantage. Through promoting the use of proper breathing, the student learns to control their attacker, ultimately ending the confrontation. Joint locks, pressure points, throws and pins are the basic components of Aikido. Strength is not a factor in the overall application of the art; thus, this art offers women and children a very effective means of self-defense. Aikido teaches relaxed, smooth and balanced movement. It teaches mind-body coordination and harmony with one's partner. Practitioners learn that softness, calmness and harmony are not weaknesses, instead, such qualities are the most effective response one can make to violence and aggression.

Therefore, the practice of Aikido consists of a distinctive series of movements, embedded in the techniques - each capable of deflecting or redirecting any attack, whether launched by one person or several people.

In Aikido at its best, almost before the attacker realizes what happened, their attack has been neutralized, quickly, and cleanly.

The purpose of the Bushido Martial Arts Aikido training is to replace various instinctive responses (like clashing directly into or against another person's force) with other, more subtle and refined instinctive responses (such as evading an attack almost as soon as it is launched and then directing or guiding it away from you.)

The Founder:
Aikido was founded by Master Morihei Uyeshiba. He developed it from various other martial arts which he learned as a young man.

Many of the arts and techniques which are found in Aikido date back more than 700 years to the time of the Genji and Heike regimes.
